Jacques Benoît
(1896-1982), the undisputed leader of the French school of neuroendocrinology,
was the founder of the Société de Neuroendocrinologie (in
1971). The seminal series of experiments he conducted, together with his
close collaborator Ivan Assenmacher, on the hypothalamic control of the
pituitary-gonadal axis in birds are now classics in neuroendocrinology.
During his long and exceptionally productive scientific career, he has
mentored several generations of neuroendocrinologists including Andrée
Tixier-Vidal, Claude Kordon, André Calas and William Rostène
who were all former Presidents of the Société de Neuroendocrinologie
Expérimentale.
The previous Jacques Benoît Lectures have been awarded to Nicole
Le Douarin (1991), Carl Denef (1993), Jacques Drouin (1995), André
Calas (1997), Allan
Herbison (1998), Jacques Epelbaum (2000)
and Paul Pevet (2001). The 2002 lecturer is
Hubert Vaudry.
